About the role:

We are seeking an experienced and motivated professional to provide high-level technical expertise, project leadership, and operational support in the planning, delivery, and maintenance of Council's water and wastewater infrastructure.

This role plays a vital part in ensuring the safety, reliability, and sustainability of essential services across our 15 island communities. You will lead projects that improve water security and quality, oversee compliance with regulatory standards, and drive continuous improvement in infrastructure management and service delivery.

A day in the life of this role sounds a little like this…

  • Travel to and throughout the spectacular Torres Strait Islands.
  • Manage the operation, maintenance, and improvement of Council's water and wastewater infrastructure to ensure safe, reliable, and compliant services
  • Collect, analyse, and report data to Council, regulators, and funding bodies.
  • Lead and deliver capital works and maintenance projects, ensuring compliance with TSIRC values, funding requirements, and industry standards.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to contractors, consultants, and internal teams.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define and achieve project objectives.
  • Mentor and support junior staff to build capability in water and wastewater services.

What We're Looking For

We need someone who shares our values of One, Respect, Accountability, Courage, and Resilience. The ideal candidate will have:

  • Possession of Bachelor level qualifications in Civil, Mechanical, or Environmental Engineering is mandatory.
  • Demonstrated industry experience in water and/or wastewater operations.
  • Eligibility for Membership of Engineers Australia (or equivalent Professional Institution) is desirable.
  • Postgraduate qualifications in project management, or industry certifications (such as Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) or PMBOK PMP Certification).
  • Strong people management, interpersonal, and intercultural skills with ability to communicate, negotiate and influence within an organisation, especially at executive and senior management level.
